DVD's have become the standard for video distribution in the 21st century. DVD's offer much better quality than VHS tapes and take up less storage space. Other advantages include:

• Unlike videotape, the DVD disk is never in contact with rotating heads, head drums, or capstans. There is no mechanical wear to a DVD disk, since it is scanned solely by a low power laser beam.

• The disk is also not susceptible to magnetic fields as is videotape.  Nor are they susceptible to being "eaten" by a faulty VCR mechanism.

• Once recorded, DVD’s cannot be accidently recorded over.

• The DVD disk is digitally recorded. Thus the 500th time you view it will be just as clear as the very first and copies of the discs will always be perfect digital reproductions.

DVD was originally short for Digital Video Disk as DVDs were first used for movies and video. DVDs are now also commonly known as Digital Versatile Disk because a DVD now does much more than store movies. A DVD can store up to 4.7 GB on a single layer disk and 8.5 GB an a dual layer disk. A DVD is similar in design and appearance to a CD but DVDs have a much higher capacity for holding data.
